Painted in 1964. Provenance Private collection inherited by descent, Germany In 1964, Laxman Pai exhibited at the Shridharani Gallery of the Triveni Kala Sangam in New Delhi. Blue Mirror belongs to the pivotal period following his return from Paris in 1961. The female figure, surrounded by incisive black lines, holds an ornate blue mirror. At bottom left, an eye set in a dark frame evokes both Tantric iconography and a more universally symbolic dimension. The work testifies to Pai's synthesis of the gestural expressionism inherited from his years in Paris and the ornamental repertoire of India. The work's German provenance is in keeping with Pai's longstanding links with Germany, where he exhibited in Munich, Stuttgart, Hanover and Bremen during the 1950s and 1960s, and for which he carried out a commission for the Rosenthal factory in the mid-1950s.
