Lalita Lajmi (1932-2023)
Born in Calcutta (Kolkata), Lalita Lajmi was a self-taught Indian painter, active mainly in Mumbai. From an artistic background - she is the sister of film-maker Guru Dutt - she developed her own practice from the early 1960s, after her first exhibition at the Jehangir Art Gallery in 1961.
Her work, which is essentially figurative, is characterised by a strong autobiographical dimension. Through theatrical compositions populated by recurring figures - often female - she explores psychological dynamics, family relationships and gender tensions. Nourished by introspection and dream analysis, her painting evolves towards a symbolic language in which archetypal figures appear, sometimes inspired by Hindu imagery.
For a long time on the fringes of mainstream circuits, her work received belated institutional recognition, notably with a retrospective at the National Gallery of Modern Art in Mumbai in 2023. Her works are held in several public collections, including the National Gallery of Modern Art and the British Museum.
