Description
Ahmed SHAHABUDDIN (Bangladesh, Dhaka, born 1950) Woman, 2010 Oil on canvas 81 x 100 cm Signed and dated lower left Shahabudine (20)10 *** Oil on canvas, signed and dated lower left, 31⅞ × 39⅜ in. Painted in 2010. Provenance Collection of an artists' agent, Paris, acquired directly from the artist at exhibitions organised by the collector. Ahmed Shahabuddin is one of the leading figures in modern Bangladeshi art. A veteran of Bangladesh's war of independence in 1971, this experience has had a profound effect on his work, which is permeated by notions of movement, resistance and vital energy. The figures are captured in a state of extreme momentum or tension, treated with broad, expressive gestures and fluid materials. Influenced by European expressionism as much as by South Asian calligraphy and visual rhythms, Shahabuddin constructs compositions in which the body becomes a vector of emotion and collective memory. His work is now held in numerous international collections, and he remains one of the most recognised Bangladeshi artists on the contemporary scene.
