A historical document setting out the Church’s official position on the ‘five propositions’ attributed to Jansenius: a definitive condemnation on the grounds that they were deemed heretical. ‘...to defend the unity of the Church and to oppose all innovations that might destroy it,... to halt the spread of Jansenius’s doctrine, and to steer the faithful away from the beliefs of a sect...’ ” Royal Abbey of FONTEVRAUD (Fontevrault). “Decree of the Council of State, in the presence of the King, concerning the troubles and disputes stirred up and incited within the Order of Fontevrault…”. Paris, Vitray, 1641. Paperback. Plain, faded cover; foxing. 71 pages. The Abbey of Fontevrault was co-educational from its inception and led by abbesses belonging to the royal House of Bourbon. Following a dispute with the monks, who resented being led by a woman, this ruling confirmed the abbess’s definitive role and authority.
