NUREMBERG 6 ducats, 1698, struck to commemorate the Peace of Ryswick, AU 20.84 g. Obverse: View of the city from the east, with the name of Jehovah in a halo above; in the exergue: MONETA REIPUB NORIMBERGEN SIS 1698 EXOPTATA DIV PAX COE LI EX MVNERE VENIT Reverse: Peace standing, holding a caduceus and an olive branch; at her feet, two genii with shields and palm fronds. Ref: Fr. 1872, Kellner 266 Note: Grading: NGC MS 63. TOP POP Condition: Superb specimen, almost FDC. Although this issue was long attributed to the Peace of Ryswick, this interpretation is now disputed. The year 1698 actually marks the fiftieth anniversary of the Peace of Westphalia, in which the Free Imperial City of Nuremberg took part. Whilst the treaties were negotiated in Osnabrück and Münster, the measures for implementing the peace were finalised in Nuremberg, where the conference concluded with the Imperial Peace Recess of 26 July 1650. Over time, this episode was forgotten, whilst 1648 became firmly established as the year marking the end of the great conflict.
