Gold medal, State Prize, 20 ducats, undated (1850), produced as an official award for artists, AU 69.49 g. 42 mm. Engravers: J. L. Jachtmann and C. Pfeuffer. Obverse: vignettes depicting the arts — painting, sculpture, music and architecture — arranged around a remarkable intaglio bust of Friedrich Wilhelm IV. Reverse: a quadriga driven by Apollo, overlooking the former Altes Museum, with griffins below. Ref.: see Marienburg 4173 (also exists in bronze); Sommer P105. Grading: NGC PROOF 63 CAMEO. TOP POP Condition: Struck in very high relief. A fully realised neoclassical style.
