Louis XVIII 1815–1824 5-franc gold trial coin, nude bust, Michaut design, 1815, A, Paris, AU 41.61 g, 37 mm, by Michaut. Engraved edge: DOMINE SALVUM FAC REGEM Obverse: LOUIS XVIII KING OF FRANCE. Bare head facing left, with the signature ‘MICHAUT F.’ below. Reverse: Crowned shield of France, flanked by ‘5 - F’, between two laurel branches, with the date below. Ref: G.608, Maz.739 From the collection of King Farouk, ex-Vinchon 30/06/1978, no. 333 Grading: NGC PROOF 62 CAMEO Condition: A superb and very rare specimen. This trial strike, struck in gold – whereas the standard 5-franc coin was intended to be made of silver – is particularly rare. It illustrates the political and artistic transition of 1815, a time when the restored monarchy sought to reaffirm its image through a new monetary iconography. Owing to the quality of its craftsmanship, its precious metal and its historical context, this trial strike by Michaut ranks amongst the most sought-after creations in French numismatics from the Restoration period.
