Victoria 1837–1901 Proof gold medal Centenary of the capture of Trinidad undated (1897), AU 38.87 g. 39 mm Ref: Eimer-1809b, BHM-3623 (R) Grading: NGC MS 61 Condition: Superb commemorative specimen, displaying remarkable and high-quality reliefs. A rare, unsigned gold medal, issued to mark the centenary of the campaigns led by Sir Ralph Abercrombie against French forces in the late 18th century, which led to the capture of SainteLucy and Trinidad and the assertion of British sovereignty, ratified in 1802 by the Peace of Amiens. According to Brown, these medals are believed to have been struck locally in Trinidad and were originally accompanied by a certificate issued by the official committee organising the centenary celebrations.
