Silver medal, 1854, Reconstruction of the Basilica of St Paul Outside the Walls, AG 81 mm Obverse: PIVS IX PONT MAX Bust facing right wearing a zucchetto, mozzetta and stole, adorned with a figure of the seated Church holding a cross and chalice within a scroll-work cartouche, and the Holy Spirit. Reverse: PIVS IX P M BASILICAM PAVLI APOST AB INCENDIO REFECTAM SOLEMNI RITV CONSECRAVIT IV ID DEC MDCCCLIV Grading: NGC MS 63 Condition: virtually FDC. Given its large size, this coin is extremely rare in such an advanced state of preservation, with no scratches, unsightly marks or dents. Presented in its original Pius IX case, the artistry of the medallists reflects the intense activity surrounding the restoration of religious buildings. The Basilica of St Paul Outside the Walls, destroyed by fire in 1823, was rebuilt and consecrated in 1854. His long pontificate coincided with the unification of Italy and the demise of the Papal States. After the capture of Rome, the Pope regarded himself as confined to the Vatican until the Lateran Pacts (1929), which established the sovereignty of Vatican City.
