Rare In the 19th century, during the Victorian era under the reign of Vittoria of the United Kingdom, Newfoundland (now part of the Canadian province of Terranova e Labrador, in Canada) was an important British colony. Its economy relied mainly on the cod fishery and maritime trade. The island also served as a strategic hub for navigation in the North Atlantic. Newfoundland was not yet part of Canada at that time and would not join the federation until 1949.
