Alexander I 1801–1825 Silver half-rouble trial coin, undated (1804), Soho Mint by Matthew Boulton, Master of the Mint, and Conrad Heinrich Küchler, designer, AG Obverse: ALEXANDER I · D: G · IMP · AVTOCR · RVSSOR ·, draped bust facing right in military dress Reverse: Crowned double-headed eagle facing forward, wings outstretched, holding the globe and sceptre; on the breast, a shield within the collar of the Order of St Andrew; a crown above. Ref: Bit-Ж919 Formerly of the Silberstein Collection Grading: PCGS SPECIMEN 64 Condition: FDC, very rare. The only specimen graded by PCGS “Matthew Boulton, an ingenious engineer and founder of the Soho Mint, earned his living not only by minting coins, but also by selling modern, turnkey minting workshops. He was commissioned to build such a mint in Russia and dispatched a team of British craftsmen to St Petersburg for this project. In order to train the Russian specialists in the use of the most advanced machinery of the time – which they would use to strike coins once the mint was completed – the Birmingham headquarters sent them a parcel containing not only dies, but also minting samples, illustrating the desired final appearance. These samples served as models, enabling the craftsmen to adjust the machines correctly. Although it is not known whether the trial coin proposed by Gadoury was produced in Birmingham or St Petersburg, it constitutes an exceptionally rare record of the modernisation of Russian coinage.” (Ursula Kampmann)
