[CHAUVIGNY (Louis de)]. *The Good Herbarium for One’s Best Friend* by a Gardener of Parnassus. – *The New Good Herbarium for One’s Best Friend* by a Gardener of Parnassus. Paris, Editions du Monde Nouveau – Published by Editeurs Associés, [1924–1926]. Set of 2 small quarto volumes comprising 35 pp., (2) ff. and 43 pp., (2) ff.; brown half-basane, smooth, decorated spines, covers preserved (contemporary binding). A collection of poems devoted to botany, enriched with a portrait, an unsigned watercolour drawing and 8 original drawings by Eugène Bléry. The first volume, printed in a run of 500 numbered copies (no. 6), includes two additional illustrations: a photographic portrait of the author, printed on paper, and an unsigned watercolour drawing depicting a bouquet of flowers. The second volume, printed in a run of 250 copies on Montgolfier pure-fibre paper (no. 240), is enriched with eight original pencil drawings, signed with Eugène Bléry’s initials, depicting botanical subjects, and an engraving by the same artist. Marie Léon Louis Liger de Chauvigny (1856–1941), a career officer, mayor of Bessé-sur-Braye and man of letters, returned to active service during the First World War as head of the department for the protection of French and Allied interests at the Spanish legation in Bern; he was also the author of several novels and collections of poetry. Eugène Stanislas Alexandre Bléry (1805–1886), a French painter, engraver and lithographer, was one of the great landscape artists of his time. The creator of remarkable etchings inspired by his travels in France, he exhibited regularly at the Paris Salon between 1834 and 1868, was the teacher of Charles Meryon, and personally printed his own prints, which were highly sought after for their fine execution. (cf. Bénézit, II, p. 396). Included with the first volume are a visiting card, an autograph letter signed by the artist and the advertisement insert. Also included with the second volume are three signed autograph letters, an article on Eugène Bléry and three letters, mostly from his family, including a typewritten letter signed by his son Louis Gaston (1898–1957) recalling his father. Provenance: Albert Rinjard, a barrister at the Le Mans Bar, with autograph dedications signed by the author at the front of each volume. Spines sun-faded.
