Description
BAILLY (Jean-Sylvain). A History of Ancient Astronomy, from its Origins to the Founding of the School of Alexandria. Second edition. Paris, Debure, 1781. Quarto, xxiv, 527 pp., 3 folding plates. Marbled calfskin, decorated ribbed spine, title label, marbled edges (contemporary binding). As an astronomer, Jean-Sylvain Bailly (1736–1793) is chiefly recognised for his research into Jupiter’s moons and for his monumental *History of Astronomy*, the scientific and literary quality of which earned him election to the Académie française in 1783. As a politician, he was elected the first deputy for Paris during the Revolution; he subsequently became President of the Constituent Assembly and presided over the famous historic session at the Jeu de Paume. Appointed Mayor of Paris, he was unable to resist the worst excesses of the revolutionaries and met his end on the scaffold in 1793. A fine copy.
