Description
DILICH (Wilhelm). *Peribologia, or Wilhelm Dilich’s Historical Account of the Fortifications of Various Places*, expanded to include many locations, supplemented with relevant reasons and illustrations, and published by Johann Wilhelm Dilich (...). Frankfurt am Main, Anton Hummen, 1640.
3 parts in one substantial folio volume, 163 pp., including the engraved title page and chapter headings engraved in mandorlas or octagons, [8] pp.; [327] ff., comprising 300 copperplate engravings (plans, elevations, diagrams); [104] ff., comprising 110 engravings, stiff ivory-coloured vellum with flaps, smooth spine, traces of lacing, edges speckled with red (contemporary binding). Slight water-stain on the third part.
First edition (there is a second edition dated 1641), published during his father’s lifetime by the author’s son, Johann Wilhelm Dilich (1600–1657).
Wilhelm Schäfer or Schöfer, known as Wilhelm Dilich (1571–1650), a man of many technical skills, was initially employed by the Landgrave of Hesse-Kassel, but from March 1625 onwards he entered the service of Elector John George I of Saxony (1585–1656), who entrusted him, amongst other things, with the construction of the fortifications in his territories. This work summarises his experience in the two German states where he worked.
Jordan 894. Marini, p. 79 (cites a 1630 edition which is not attested anywhere else).
