Description
DUPIN (Charles). Developments in Geometry, with applications to the stability of vessels, to excavation and embankment, to rolling motion, to optics, etc., as a follow-up to M. Monge’s *Descriptive Geometry* and *Analytical Geometry*. Paris, Veuve Courcier, 1813. Quarto, red percaline, plain spine, gilt title (modern binding). First edition, illustrated with 11 folding plates engraved in intaglio by Adam after Dupin. Autograph dedication by the author on the half-title page: ‘Offered to Dr Olynthers Gregory from the author Ch. Dupin’. Copy from the Newnham College Library, with library and cancellation stamps and call number on the spine. Spine faded, upper joint split, stain on the second cover, foxing, repairs to the half-title page and a few plates. Baron Charles Dupin (1784–1873) distinguished himself from a very young age through his aptitude for the study of mathematics. Admitted to the École Polytechnique in 1801, he wrote essays on geometry which earned him the patronage and friendship of Monge.
