The Hague, Gosse & Neaulme, 1728–1729. 3 folio volumes, porphyry calfskin, triple gilt rule, gilt spandrels, decorated ribbed spine, gilt interior lace, gilt edges (contemporary binding). Some restoration, fragile joints. The most famous edition of the Works of Bernard Le Bovier de Fontenelle, printed on large-format paper and reprinted in folio format, with the text framed by a typographical frieze. First printing of Bernard Picart’s remarkable illustrations, comprising a frontispiece with a portrait of the author after Hyacinthe Rigaud, 5 full-page plates, 2 title medallions and 174 vignettes and tailpieces. The final volume contains Fontenelle’s famous academic eulogies, which take the form of biographical sketches dedicated to the greatest scholars of his time, including Isaac Newton, Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz, Nicolas Malebranche, Jean-Dominique Cassini, Sébastien Le Prestre de Vauban, Joseph Pitton de Tournefort and Johann Bernoulli, amongst others.
