Description
GROLLIER de SERVIERE (Gaspard). A Collection of Curious Works on Mathematics and Mechanics, or a Description of Monsieur Grollier de Servière’s Cabinet. Lyon, David Forey, 1733.
Quarto, marbled calf, decorated ribbed spine, title page, red edges (pastiche binding).
Second edition, expanded to include new machines and illustrated with 94 engraved plates (chapters I–LXXXVIII, including 7 bis; plate LXXVI does not exist). This work is a catalogue of the collection of mechanical curiosities assembled in Lyon by Nicolas, a military engineer, and later by Gaspard Grollier, and compiled by Gaspard II Grollier, grandson of the former and nephew of the latter. The two inventors brought together all manner of curious objects, including clocks, models of machines for raising and channelling water, mills, temporary bridges… as well as a wheelchair and machines for drawing up plans.
