Description
BOITARD (Pierre). A Naturalist’s Manual: The Art of Taxidermy and the Preservation of Plants and Minerals. Paris, Roret [Cosson Press], 1825. In-16, [2] leaves, 244 pp., green half-basane, plain spine decorated with gilt fillets, red title page, marbled endpapers (contemporary binding). Spine slightly sun-faded and worn, foxing. A rare first edition; the work was continuously reprinted until the end of the 19th century. A former Napoleonic officer, Pierre Boitard (1789–1859) came to Paris in search of his fortune in the early 1820s: spotted by the bookseller Louis-Eustache Audot, he contributed to the *La Botanique des dames* series from 1821 onwards, and subsequently collaborated with four journals on agronomy and botany.
