A set of 21 quarto volumes, in pale calfskin, with a decorated ribbed spine, triple gilt fillet, and red edges (contemporary binding). Caps and corners slightly worn, a few scuffs and scuffs on the leather, dark damp stain on a few covers, incipient tears at some joints. First edition. General History (including 3 volumes on *How to Study Natural History* followed by *The Theory of the Earth*, *General History of Animals* and *Natural History of Man*, and 12 volumes on quadrupeds (1753–1767)), 1749–1767: 15 vols., 573 plates of natural history. Supplements, 1774–1782: 6 volumes (out of 7) comprising 148 plates and 2 maps. Excluding the 9 volumes of *Natural History of Birds* (1770–1783), the 5 volumes of *Natural History of Minerals* (1783–1786), the 7th and final volume of the supplements (1789) and the 2 volumes of the *Natural History of Oviparous Quadrupeds and Snakes* (1788–1789), nor the 6 volumes of *Fishes and Cetaceans*, which were published later. A few small tears with no pages missing, a few small foxing spots. A fine set containing 723 engraved plates.
