Description
Ornithology – BELON (Pierre). Portraits of birds, animals, snakes, herbs, trees, men and women of Arabia and Egypt: all accompanied by quatrains, to aid in the identification of the birds and other subjects. Paris, Guillaume Cavellat, 1557. Quarto, (10)-124 folios, brown calfskin, ribbed spine (contemporary binding). First edition dedicated to King Henry II, illustrated with a fold-out plate depicting a view of Mount Sinai (the fold-out plate of the Aegean Sea is missing), and 219 woodcuts in the text (a portrait of the author, a plan of Alexandria, a map of the Hellespont, and 212 woodcuts, the majority of which depict birds in their natural habitats). A rare work on ornithology by Pierre Belon (1517–1564), one of the most famous scientists of the 16th century. A fine copy, free from foxing, from the De Cayrol library, bearing its handwritten bookplate and signature. Binding worn, with very slight marginal worm damage.
