Paris, Ribou, 1666. 3 parts in one small quarto volume, ivory vellum, smooth spine, black and blind-stamped decoration on the spine and covers (19th-century binding). First French edition, featuring a beautifully engraved title page, 5 (out of 6) engraved plates, including one fold-out, and several figures within the text. The plate depicting the fittings is missing. Scattered minor foxing, fine marginal wormholes. A cut at the top of the title page and the first folio of the preface, with no loss of text. “In this curious and verbose work one finds all the extravagances of the old farriers, their bizarre and barbaric remedies, their belief in the influence of the stars, their methods for inducing a mare to produce a male or female foal at will, for determining pregnancy, etc. […]” (Mennessier de La Lance, II, 156–157).
