SAINT-PHALLE (Jacques de). Équitation. Paris, Legoupy & Cie, 1907. 2 volumes bound together as a single small quarto volume, in red half-basane, smooth spine (contemporary binding). Illustrated with 17 full-page plates in the text. A cavalry officer, riding instructor at the Saumur riding school and a brilliant cross-country rider, Saint Phalle was also a dressage trainer whose remarkable achievements were demonstrated by his successful wager against Fillis. Competitive equestrian sport emerged in the mid-19th century: races, cross-country and endurance rides were mainly practised by military personnel. Very quickly, the riders of the Cadre Noir de Saumur distinguished themselves in the most prestigious events. The first ‘Championnat du Cheval d’armes’, which would later become Eventing, was organised in Saumur in 1902. It was won by a rider from the Cadre Noir, Captain de Saint-Phalle. In 1912, equestrian sports made their debut at the Olympic Games. At the 1924 Paris Olympics, Captain Lesage won the bronze medal in the individual dressage event. Two Olympic Games later in Los Angeles, he became Olympic champion in the discipline. Then came a flood of medals: in total, with 44 riders selected across 17 Olympic Games, the Cadre Noir of Saumur won nine Olympic medals, including six gold, one silver and two bronze.
