ODART (Alexandre-Pierre). A Survey of the Various Methods of Vine Cultivation and the Different Processes of Winemaking in Several of the Most Renowned Vineyards, from which, with the aid of long experience, a number of observations and a little reasoning, the rational method, presented on 1 May 1836 by the author in manuscript form and without the introduction to the Royal and Central Society of Agriculture in Paris, and unanimously approved by it [...] Tours, Ad. Mame, Moisy, 1837. In-8, [9] ff., xxij–250 pp., half-blond calf, smooth spine decorated with a gold design running lengthwise, vellum corners, marbled edges (contemporary binding). First edition of the author’s first work. Count Odart (1778–1866), a scion of an old family from Poitou, devoted himself to agriculture on his family estates (Esvres, Cheillé – in Indre-et-Loire). In particular, he cultivated vines at Esvres and set about improving the quality of the wine through a judicious selection of grape varieties.
