OETTINGER (Édouard Marie). An Agathopede of the Empire, or An Essay on the Life and Gastronomic and Literary Works of the late GRIMOD DE LA REYNIERE. Brussels and Leipzig, Kiessling, Schnée & Co., 1854. 16mo, paperback, printed cover (heavily restored). First quire detached. A rare work printed in an edition of 300 copies, whose author, Eduard Maria Oettinger (1808–1872), a Prussian writer, was also a member of the Société des Agathopèdes, a secret, liberal and satirical society dedicated to gastronomy and scholarship, founded in Brussels in 1846 by Antoine Schayes, purportedly as a continuation of the Order of the Agathopedes, said to date from the 15th century. It appears to have ceased to exist in the last quarter of the 20th century.
