Description
ROZIER (François). A Treatise on the Best Method of Producing and Managing Wines, Whether for Domestic Consumption or for Export. A work of use to all wine-producing regions, which won the prize, as judged by the Academy of Marseille, in the year 1770. Paris, Ruault, 1772. In-8, viij-350 pp., [1] title leaf, with 3 folding plates ‘in fine’, brown half-basane, plain decorated spine, edges speckled with red (early 19th-century binding). A fine copy. One of the two print runs of the second edition (one addressed to Lausanne, the other to Paris), substantially expanded; the original, which is very rare, dates from 1771 and is addressed to Marseille (and is not mentioned by Oberlé) and comprises only 88 pp. The work is one of the first to deal rigorously with the wines of the south, particularly those of Provence; the sections devoted to the transport of wines and the types of vessels suitable for this purpose are particularly interesting.
