Drafted for the instruction of the Duke of Burgundy as part of the major administrative inquiry launched by the Duke of Beauvillier (1697), this handwritten treatise by the Intendant of Alsace, Jacques François de La Grange, paints a remarkable historical, administrative, economic, religious and demographic picture of the province at the end of the reign of Louis XIV, whilst offering valuable observations on the character and customs of its inhabitants.
