Description
Champagne – BARBAT (Louis). History of the town of Châlons-sur-Marne and its monuments, from its origins to the present day (1854). Châlons-sur-Marne, published by the author, 1855–1860.
1 volume of text and 1 volume of plates bound together as a single substantial large quarto volume, in blue half-shagreen, with an ornate ribbed spine.
First edition, illustrated with a coloured title page and 115 lithographed plates inserted separately from the text, some in colour (maps, plans, views, monuments, portraits).
This work is the culmination of a lifetime’s labour: the engraver and lithographer Louis Barbat (1795–1870), born into a family of architects, draughtsmen, engravers, born and died in Châlons, was not only the first to embark on chromolithography (as early as 1833), but he also devoted himself entirely to his city. A member of Châlons City Council for 33 years, he was appointed in 1850 as a member of the city’s commission for almshouses and hospitals, served on the Commercial Court, and finally produced this magnificent *History of the City of Châlons*, based on drawings made on site and then finely lithographed by himself.
A superb copy with no foxing.
