Description
Corsica – [SALVINI (Gregorio)]. Justification of the Corsican Revolution, and of the firm resolution taken by the Corsicans never again to submit to the rule of Genoa. Oletta [Livorno], Stamperia della Verità, 1758 (1764). In-8, [2] ff., 408 pp., stiff ivory vellum, smooth spine, title page, edges speckled with red (contemporary binding). A very rare edition of the *Rivoluzione di Corsica* attributed to Gregorio Salvini, the original of which was published in Naples in April 1758. The standard edition bears the Naples address (and the same date of 1758). According to Starace, the date of 1758 is fictitious, though he does not propose an alternative date; other bibliographers, however, date this edition to around 1764. The parish of Oletta, in the north-east of the island, played a decisive role in the Corsicans’ struggle against Genoa from 1729 to 1769; whilst it is honoured here as the place of printing for this manifesto, it is unlikely that any printing presses existed there in the 18th century. A second edition appeared in 1764, addressed to Corte, and it is this edition that is generally found. A friend, confidant and mentor to Pascal Paoli, Abbé Gregorio Salvini (1696–1789) became involved, from the very outset of the Corsican Revolution in 1729, in the insurgent movement against the Republic of Genoa. Very quickly, the *Giustificazione* became the foundation upon which the island’s nationalist propaganda developed in the early 1760s, leading up to the final phase of the struggle against the Republic of Genoa. And the work had such an impact that it remains remembered to this day: the Territorial Collectivity of Corsica, elected on 13 December 2015 and with a nationalist majority, took its oath on the *Giustificazione*, represented by Gilles Simeoni and Jean-Guy Talamoni. (Starace, Bibliographie de la Corse, 3092.) Handwritten ex-libris by Xavier Versini (1926–2020), former president of the Paris Assize Court and historian of Corsica. A very fine copy.
