Description
Languedoc – BESSÉ (Guillaume). History of the Counts of Carcassonne. Béziers, Estradier, 1645. Quarto, marbled calfskin, decorated ribbed spine, gilt fillet on the edges. A rare first edition, illustrated with a burin-engraved frontispiece depicting Madame Carcas seated on the Porte Narbonnaise, as well as numerous wood-engraved headpieces and initials. (Saffroy III 37846.) Guillaume Bessé, a jurist and local historian, drew inspiration from the unpublished works of Canon Bernard de Stellat, who died in 1629, to compose this chronicle. This history is of paramount interest precisely because of its legendary nature, which was criticised in its own time. These legends, myths and fables are, for us today, an invaluable record of the traditions and folk tales of the era. Bessé was the epic chronicler of the illustrious city’s military exploits; without him, all these legends would have been forgotten. A fine copy in an 18th-century binding.
