Description
Provence – MILLIN (Aubin Louis). A Journey through the Departments of Southern France. Paris, Imprimerie Impériale, 1807–1811. 4 tomes in 5 in-8 volumes for the text and 1 large in-4 volume of atlases, all uniformly bound in brown glazed half-calf, with smooth, decorated spines (a romantic binding of the period). The illustrations comprise 84 separate plates, most of which are fold-outs, including 1 music plate and 3 plates enhanced with colour, a fold-out plate in volume 4, as well as numerous figures within the text. First edition of one of the very first archaeological surveys carried out during the Empire. The author has thoroughly researched all the traditions, legends and history of Provence, the Dauphiné, Languedoc and the Pyrenees. The book also discusses the Provençal language and popular festivals. The edge of the atlas volume is slightly dented; there is foxing on the margins of the plates; otherwise a fine copy.
