Description
Savoy – FORTIS (François Marie, Count of). *Amélie, or A Journey to Aix-les-Bains and the Surrounding Area*. Turin, Pic, 1829. 2 volumes in one in-8 volume of [4]-422-[4] pp., [2]-431 pp. Half havana morocco, plain spine with decoration, title and volume number in gold. A public prosecutor in Lyon, then in Paris, and a staunch monarchist, François Marie de Fortis (1768–1847) published no works during the Revolution or the Empire. He was a member of the Société nationale des antiquaires de France, and of the Académie des sciences, belles-lettres et arts de Savoie (see chts.fr). First edition of one of the earliest Romantic works devoted to the spa town of Aix-les-Bains and the Savoie region. Blending fiction, picturesque descriptions and historical observations, the author guides the reader through Aix, Lake Bourget, Hautecombe Abbey, Chambéry, the Bauges and the region’s main natural sites. Published in 1829, when Savoy still belonged to the Kingdom of Piedmont-Sardinia, this work bears witness to the popularity of Romantic tourism in Aix-les-Bains and the Alps, whilst also serving as an interesting source for the history of spa culture and for the depiction of Savoyard landscapes in the early 19th century.
