Southern France – MILLIN (Aubin-Louis). A Journey through the Southern Departments of France. Paris, Imprimerie Impériale, 1807–1811. 4 volumes bound as 5 in-8 volumes (text) and 2 parts bound as 1 folio volume (atlas), in uniform havana half-calf binding with small corners, smooth spine with decoration, title page in red marbled paper (contemporary binding). [2] XII–548 pp., [2] 600 pp., [2] 662 pp., [4] 476 pp., [2] pp. 477–917. The illustrations comprise 83 separate plates (ch. I–LXXX, including 3 bis), most of which are fold-outs (including 1 music plate and 3 colour plates), a folded table, and numerous figures within the text. First edition of one of the very first archaeological surveys carried out during the Empire. The author has thoroughly researched all the traditions, legends and history of Provence, the Dauphiné, Languedoc and the Pyrenees. It also discusses the Provençal language and folk festivals. A few discreet repairs to the binding. Foxing in the atlas. Stamps from the Castres Savings and Provident Bank. A fine copy in a uniform binding of the period for both the text and the atlas, which is rare. First edition of one of the very first archaeological surveys carried out during the Empire.
