Description
Vienne – BONCENNE (Pierre). On the Navigation of the Clain, and its confluence with the Charente and the Sèvre-Niortaise. Poitiers, Catineau, 1807. In-8, VII-46 pp., one blank folio, with a large fold-out map, green half-vellum with corner pieces, plain decorated spine, double gilt line on the covers, speckled edges (mid-19th-century binding). A rare and unique edition. Pierre Boncenne (1774–1840), a lawyer from Poitiers, served as an administrator of the Vienne department and as a prefectural councillor. It was in this capacity that he wrote several treatises on the River Clain and its canalisation. Bound together with the following work by the same author: Report on the confluence of the Dordogne and the Loire, and the channelling of the Clain, presented to the General Council of the department of Vienne (…), at the sitting of 1 September 1839. Poitiers, F.-A. Saurin, undated [1839], 24 pp. The collection begins with a handwritten table of contents, which reveals that it originally contained two additional pamphlets that were subsequently removed, causing the back of the binding to come loose: a text by La Fontenelle on Philippe de Commines in Poitou (1836); a pamphlet from 1789. A copy from La Boutière-Lencloître, with an ex-libris vignette pasted onto the front endpapers.
