That is, a General and Accurate Description of the Land and Places of the Mighty Kingdom of France [...] Amsterdam, Joost Broersz, Caspar Merian, 1660–1662. 2 volumes (of 4) in-4, brown calfskin, decorated ribbed spine, title page, double gilt fillet framing the covers with a gilt laurel medallion in the centre (contemporary binding). Caps and corners worn and scuffed. A few small, faint waterstains. A few small marginal tears with no loss of text or engraving. Foxing in places. Dutch edition illustrated with 2 frontispieces, 9 maps, and 197 views and plans engraved by Mérian (on 156 plates), most of which are double-page spreads (including 4 fold-outs). Volumes one (France and Île-de-France) and three (Lyon, Berry, Beauce and Normandy) only. Missing volumes 2 and 4, but otherwise a fine copy of this famous work, richly illustrated with maps and views of towns, villages, castles, churches and landscapes of 17th-century France. Ex-libris of Paul Chapuy, mining engineer.
