Description
DU PLESSIS (Michel-Toussaint Chrétien). New Annals of Paris up to the reign of Hugh Capet. Included is Abbon’s poem on the famous siege of Paris by the Normans in 885 and 886, rendered much more accurately than in any previous edition; with notes to aid understanding of the text. By Dom Toussaints Du Plessis, a Benedictine monk of the Congregation of Saint-Maur. Paris: published by the Widow Lottin & J. H. Butard, 1753.
Quarto, IV–380 pp. marbled havana calf, decorated ribbed spine, title label in brown morocco, red edges (contemporary binding)
First edition. A Benedictine monk of the Congregation of Saint-Maur, Du Plessis (1689–1767) was in charge of the public library of Orléans and was subsequently appointed librarian of the Abbey of Saint-Germain; he later retired to the Abbey of Saint-Denis; this chronicle of the Early Middle Ages is fully in keeping with the works of the Maurists, renowned for their critical acumen and rigour; a remarkable study of the schools of Paris during the reign of Charlemagne. A very thorough and meticulous critical edition in French of the poem by Abbon of Saint-Germain-des-Prés (c. 850–c. 922), the principal historical source on this Viking military expedition against the capital. Corners and edges damaged.
