A fine drawing over 2 metres in length, executed in pen, black ink and wash, depicting a drainage system in a Parisian building. This undated and unsigned drawing bears the name and address of the company that offered to install this drainage system: ‘A. Jacquemin, 9 rue Saint-Paul, Paris’. This company was awarded a gold medal in the civil engineering and sanitation category at the 1894 Lyon World’s Fair, and also exhibited at the 1900 World’s Fair in Paris. The system described here is known as the ‘tout-à-l’égout’ (sewerage system). Approved in 1880 by the Paris City Council, it became compulsory in 1894. In good condition; a few restored tears, a loss in the left margin and redrawn right-hand corners; the whole has been backed with Japanese paper.
