Description
LEBEUF (Jean). History of the City and the Entire Diocese of Paris. Paris, Prault, 1754–1758. 15 vols. in-12, brown sheepskin, plain spine with decoration, red edges (contemporary binding) A first edition, extremely rare, of this ecclesiastical history of the vast Archdiocese of Paris, examined deanery by deanery: Abbé Lebeuf (1687–1760), the learned scholar from Auxerre who was so close to the Friends of Port-Royal, pored over charters, parish registers and censuses to compile it. The picture that emerges is indispensable, in its precision, for the historian of the Paris region. The set is complete in all fifteen volumes, which is rare. 1 fold-out map. (Precise collation available on request.) Very fine copy, headbands restored. Provenance: Philippe Louis Marc Antoine de Noailles (1752–1819), ex-libris of the Mouchy Library (cf. Catalogue of the Mouchy Castle Library, Techener 1872, no. 1992); Mareuse, 45.
