Description
PALAISEAU (J.-L.-G.). The Belt of Paris. [Paris], [Gastel], 1819. Large folio (47 x 31 cm), 48 watercolour plates, numbered at the press and hand-labelled, missing the plate index, Bradel binding in navy blue paper, spine decorated with gilt fillets, burgundy title page (modern binding). A very rare collection of 48 engraved plates depicting all the Paris toll gates designed by Claude-Nicolas Ledoux for the Wall of the Farmers-General. Constructed from 1784 onwards to oversee the collection of the octroi tax, these ‘Propylaea’ rank among the masterpieces of Neoclassical architecture, and this collection constitutes the only complete depiction of all the buildings as they stood in the early 19th century.
