Description
PIGANIOL DE LA FORCE (Jean-Aymar). Historical Description of the City of Paris and its Environs. New edition, revised, corrected and considerably expanded. With intaglio engravings. Paris, G. Desprez, 1765.
10 vols. in-12, marbled fawn calf, ornate ribbed spine, red title labels, red edges (contemporary binding). Slight tear at one joint, rubbed cap ends, damaged corners, some pages foxed.
The final and finest edition: ‘This edition constitutes the last complete description of Paris bequeathed to us by the 18th century’ (Dumolin), and no 19th-century description would ever match its scope.
The illustrations include a general map (fold-out), 22 neighbourhood maps (two for the Cité district and two for the St-Antoine district) engraved by Scotin, and 71 fold-out plates (all but ten), some by Hérisset, Lucas or Aveline. Among these, several are particularly interesting for the views they offer (the palaces of Meudon, Saint-Cloud and Versailles, the Palais-Bourbon, the Luxembourg Gardens, the Saint-Denis, Saint-Martin and Saint-Bernard gates) or for the detail of their ornamentation (the various tombs). (Detailed collation available on request.)
Cohen, 800 (gives the correct collation for each volume, but makes a mistake in the total and erroneously gives 97 plates). (cf. Dumolin, Notes sur les vieux guides de Paris, 66–67. Lacombe Catalogue, 917.)
Ex-libris vignette by Yves-Louis Mongrolle.
