Description
SAUVAL (Henri) [& ROUSSEAU (Claude-Bernard)]. History and Research into the Antiquities of the City of Paris. Paris, Charles Moette, Jacques Chardon, 1724. 3 folio volumes of [6]-11-(one blank)-784 pp. [numbered 1 to 728 and 617 to 672]; [2]-8-759 pp.; [2]-4-87-(one blank)-682-89-[2] pp., titles printed in red and black, marbled brown calfskin, ornate ribbed spine, brown title and volume number labels, red edges (contemporary binding). Caps and corners worn, scuffed and with some leather loss. First edition. Henri Sauval (1623–1676), a lawyer at the Parliament of Paris, gave up his legal career to devote himself to the history of the capital. For nearly twenty years, he undertook an extensive study of ancient Paris, examining its monuments, institutions, guilds and inhabitants, as well as its customs and daily life. Drawing on an immense body of archival material – civil, religious and royal, much of which has since been lost – and on the works of the scholars of his time, he compiled an exceptional body of documentation. He died before completing his work, leaving his manuscripts to his collaborator Claude-Bernard Rousseau, who was tasked with organising and preserving them.
