Description
[DEZAUCHE (Jean-Claude)]. *Le Voyageur curieux, ou Vûes des routes de France*. Paris, C-J. Panckoucke, undated (c. 1760). Quarto, [2] folios, with 7 colour maps, all engraved on copper, bound in a green paper dust jacket. Despite its very general title, the booklet provides details of only one route, as indicated in the dedication to the Prince of Marsan: ‘The Road from Paris to Compiègne’. A publisher and map dealer, as well as an engraver and engineer-geographer, Jean-Claude Dezauche (1745–1824) was to acquire, in June 1780, the cartographic collection of Guillaume Delisle and Philippe Buache, his uncle, the King’s and the Academy of Sciences’ chief geographers, to whom he succeeded. He subsequently obtained the monopoly on the sale of maps produced by the Dépôt de la Marine and, in this capacity, was put in charge of the “general warehouse for naval maps”. A single copy is held at the CCF (Strasbourg, which does not specify the date).
