Africa – DURAND (Émile). A French Exploration of the Zambezi. Paris, Challamel et Cie, 1888. In-8, 115-(1) pp.; brown half-shagreen with corners, ribbed spine decorated with gilt fillets (contemporary binding). Offprint of an account published in the *Revue française*. The illustration consists of a fold-out engraved map showing the mission’s routes. An engineer, the author took part, in 1881, in an expedition tasked with studying the resources, and particularly the mineral wealth, of the lower Zambezi basin. This expedition was led by Joaquim Carlos Paiva de Andrada, a Portuguese military officer, explorer and administrator of the Mozambique Company. The latter was one of three private companies established by Portugal to develop and exploit its colony of Mozambique. The company’s capital was largely French. Of the twelve members of the expedition, nine were French, hence the title of the account. A good copy. Covers and edges rubbed, corners worn.
