Description
Africa – GABY (Jean-Baptiste). An Account of Nigritia, containing an accurate description of its kingdoms and their governments, the religion, manners, customs and curiosities of this country, together with the discovery of the River Sénéga, of which a separate map has been drawn up. Paris, Edmé Couterot, 1689. In-12, (5) folios, 90 pages, (1) folio; havana calfskin, decorated ribbed spine (contemporary binding). First edition, illustrated with an engraved map depicting the ‘Second rapids of the River Sénéga, hitherto unknown’. A French missionary during the reign of Louis XIV, Father Gaby joined the Order of the Observance of Loches, of which he became superior, and decided to go and preach the faith to the Black people of the African coast. He left Paris on 11 March 1686, embarked at Le Havre, and landed in Senegal on 5 June. His account of the journey provides valuable details on the customs and traditions of the local population, as well as the region’s religion and politics, and describes the difficulties and possibilities of travelling inland by river. A fine copy.
