First edition. It is illustrated with 2 fold-out plates included in the pagination and 78 engraved plates outside the text (maps, views, genre scenes, types, natural history, botany). A work by Father Labat compiled almost entirely from the memoirs of André Brue, Commander-in-Chief of the Senegal and Africa Company. It contains precise details on the history of the trading companies situated in Mauritania, Senegal, Guinea and Sierra Leone, as well as on the natural history, customs, traditions and religions of the various peoples inhabiting these regions. Numerous passages concern the slave trade. A fine copy. Bearings the ex-libris of Michel Chasles (1793–1880), a French mathematician and member of the Academy of Sciences.
