Description
Africa – LOBO (Jérôme). Historical Account of Abyssinia. Paris, Veuve Coustelier et Guérin, 1728. Quarto, havana calfskin, decorated ribbed spine, title label (contemporary binding). First French edition, translated from the Portuguese. Engraved frontispiece, xiv-[4]-514 pp.-[4] ff., two fold-out maps: the map of Abyssinia (sic) and the map of Eastern Ethiopia by d’Anville 1727 (which is often missing). Tears, but no pages missing, at the fold of the map of Ethiopia. One of the earliest accounts of Abyssinia, predating Bruce. Translated by Abbé Joachim Legrand, embassy secretary in Lisbon, it contains, in addition to Father Lobo’s account, numerous memoirs and letters from travellers on this region. The author (1594–1678) joined the Jesuits in Coimbra and set sail for the East Indies at an early age. From 1625 to 1634, he lived in Abyssinia and brought back from his stay numerous observations on the manners and customs of its inhabitants, as well as a description of the Nile. Bookplate of E. Larnac, lawyer. A few small foxing spots; the paper is very slightly browned in places. A fine copy.
