Africa – LOYER (Godefroy). Account of a journey to the Kingdom of Issyny, on the Gold Coast, in the land of Guinea, in Africa. Paris, Arnoul Seneuze and Jean-Raoul Morel, 1714. In-12, (6) folios, 298 pp.; havana calfskin, decorated ribbed spine (contemporary binding). First illustrated edition with 8 engraved plates. A Dominican missionary, the author was part of the expedition organised in 1701 to bring back Aniaba, a young African brought to France in 1687, and presented as the heir to the kingdom of Issinie, on the coast of Guinea (now in Côte d’Ivoire and Ghana), and on whom Louis XIV and the Guinea Company were counting to establish relations with that kingdom. However, on their arrival, Aniaba was of no assistance to them. Nevertheless, the merchants were able to establish a fort, and Father Loyer obtained permission to evangelise. He thus acquired a profound knowledge of the language, culture, politics and trade of that kingdom. A fine copy.
