Africa – RAFFENEL (Anne-Jean-Baptiste). A Journey through West Africa, including an exploration of Senegal from Saint-Louis to the Falémé River beyond Bakel; of the Falémé River from its mouth to Sansandig; the gold mines of Kéniéba in the Bambouk; the regions of Galam, Bondou and Woolli; and the Gambia from Baracounda to the ocean; carried out in 1843 and 1844 by a commission comprising Messrs Huard-Bessinières, Jamin, Raffenel, Peyre-Ferry and Pottin-Patterson. Paris, Arthus Bertrand, 1846. One volume of text in 8vo, red half-chagrin, spine with gold-threaded raised bands, gilt title, mottled edges, and one small folio atlas in navy blue cloth-covered cardboard with blind-stamped decoration on the covers and a gilt title on the spine (contemporary bindings). The caps of the atlas volume are worn. First edition of the author’s first journey to Africa. The atlas alone contains 2 maps and 11 fine lithographed plates of costumes based on the author’s drawings. Complete. Ex-libris of the Jean-Paul Morin Library (in the atlas).
