This makes a total for the plates of: 1 chromolithographed title page, 2 maps and 123 lithographed plates out of 142 (notably missing the double plate), most of which are tinted (except for the 10 botanical plates and 3 colour plates of costumes), complete with the map of the Zemala by Abd -El-Kader’s map of Zemala—which is very often missing—as well as the colour botanical plates. First edition of this important and superb work, the finest ever devoted to Algeria. A very rare work, printed in a run of only 500 copies, and one that is almost never found complete (Brunet, I, 782). Bindings worn, spines split, scuffed. Foxing varies greatly, sometimes pronounced; a few plates are heavily browned. Adrien Berbrugger (1801–1869) was Marshal Clauzel’s private secretary in Algeria. He collected Arabic manuscripts which formed the initial core of the Algiers Library, of which he became the first curator, as well as that of the Museum. He was also the founder of the Algerian Historical Society. He produced a remarkable collection of illustrations on Algeria, focusing more on the Algerian people than on military conquests, unlike the majority of works published at that time.
