North Africa – LAGRANGE (Octavie). Travel Memoirs. Algeria & Tunisia. Correspondence. Langres, Vathelet autograph edition, 1868. Small 8vo, paperback, printed beige cover, untrimmed. First edition, probably printed in a small run. The author accompanied her husband, Alphonse Lagrange, a doctor and botanist, on his plant-collecting expedition. Her book comprises the letters sent to her mother between January and May 1864, in which she recounts her journey that took her to Algiers, Blida, Cherchell, Tizi Ouzou, Biskra, Batna, Constantine and Tunis. In it, she extols French colonialism, which she believes brings security and civilisation. A fine copy preserved in its original binding. An autographed copy sent by the author to her cousin and his wife. The cover is stained and scuffed; the spine is broken with small losses.
