North Africa – LEMPRIERE (William). A Journey through the Empire of Morocco and the Kingdom of Fez, undertaken in the years 1790 and 1791. Containing: 1. An accurate description of these two countries, and in particular of the Atlas Mountains. 2° An overview of the local produce and trade […] 3° The government and laws, religion, manners and customs, the degradation and enslavement of the Moors, and the despotism and cruelty of the prince who rules over them. 4° The decline of the sciences and arts, the ignorance of the people, and above all that of the Arab physicians. 5° Finally, some most intriguing details concerning the harem, or seraglio, of the Emperor of Morocco. Paris, Tavernier, Cordier and Legras, Year IX–1801. In-8, comprising (2) folios, 383 pp.; fawn half-basane, smooth spine with decoration, red morocco title label, mottled blue edges (contemporary binding). First French edition, translated from the English by M. de Sainte-Suzanne. It is illustrated with two engraved plates (views of Tangier and Marrakesh) and a fold-out map drawn up by Major Rennel entitled ‘Sketch of the Northern Part of Africa’, drawn in 1790 and corrected in 1791. As a young doctor, Lemprière was sent to Morocco by the Governor of Gibraltar to treat Muley Absulem, the Sultan’s son. His profession enabled him to become the first European to have regular access to the royal harem, of which he provides a detailed description. Held against his will for six months, he travelled between Tangier and Mogador. A fine copy. Minor repairs to the binding.
